Téléphérique du Brévent, Aerial tramway in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France
The Téléphérique du Brévent is an aerial cable car in Chamonix that lifts visitors in two stages to about 2525 meters elevation, offering broad views of the Mont-Blanc mountain range. The first section reaches a middle station at approximately 2000 meters, from where the second stage continues to the summit.
The cable car was built to give visitors access to high-altitude areas that were previously reachable only with significant effort. Its opening changed who could visit the mountains and made mountain activities possible for a much wider audience.
The station buildings reflect local mountain architecture, with designs adapted to steep terrain and heavy snow that shape how communities build in the Alps. Walking through these spaces, you notice how the structures blend practical mountain construction with the regional style found across the valley.
The journey takes about 15 to 20 minutes total and operates year-round, though conditions and visibility vary greatly depending on the season. Most visitors should bring warm clothing, as temperature drops significantly with elevation and is much colder at the top than in the valley.
At the middle station Planpraz, paragliders launch flights over the Chamonix valley during summer months, offering an interesting view of how people use the mountains in a completely different way. These launches happen regularly and can be watched by visitors.
