Tabatskuri Lake

Tabatskuri is a volcanic lake in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia, situated at high altitude with rocky shores and clear waters. The body of water holds significant depth and supports a range of fish species adapted to mountain lake conditions.

The lake was documented by Georgian scholars in the 18th century as part of early geographic records of the region. Such early documentation shows this area was recognized for its natural features centuries ago.

The villages around the lake rely on fishing as a traditional practice that shapes daily life on the shore. Local fishermen work the waters using methods passed down through generations, creating a strong connection between the communities and this mountain setting.

Access to the lake comes through mountain roads from multiple directions, with the final stretches being unpaved tracks. Visitors should prepare for rough terrain and changing weather conditions, especially during winter months when roads can become difficult.

The lake receives no water from surface rivers but depends entirely on underground channels and precipitation for its supply. This unusual filling method makes it a geologically distinct location where all water movement happens beneath the ground or falls as rain and snow.
