Gedera, Historical local council in Central District, Israel
Gedera is a local council city situated across seven hills in the Southern Coastal Plain, rising about 60 meters above sea level. The settlement spreads across rolling terrain with residential neighborhoods, shops, dining venues, and public spaces that serve the community.
The Bilu group founded the settlement in 1884 after purchasing land from the French consul in Jaffa, establishing one of the region's first communities. This beginning marked the start of growth from a small outpost into a developed town.
The town is home to communities from Morocco, Yemen, and Ethiopia, whose traditions and celebrations shape daily life here. These diverse groups have created neighborhoods where different customs and ways of life naturally blend.
Shopping and dining happen mainly at the Gedera Mall, which opened in 2007 with many shops and restaurants spread across multiple levels. Visitors should prepare for hilly terrain when exploring the town on foot.
During the British Mandate period, the town drew visitors seeking recovery and rest due to its cool air and mild conditions. This reputation as a health destination left a lasting mark on how people view the place today.
