Old Jaffa

Old Jaffa is a hilly neighborhood with narrow cobblestone streets and ancient stone buildings overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It connects directly to the modern city of Tel Aviv and displays layers of different architectural periods side by side.

The port of Jaffa has existed for over seven thousand years as a major trading center for multiple civilizations. Egyptians, Phoenicians, Romans, and other peoples used this location as a crucial stopover for their ships and commerce.

The neighborhood holds religious sites like the Al-Bahr Mosque, St. Peter's Church, and the Libyan Synagogue that share the same spaces. Visitors encounter these places of worship while walking through narrow lanes and feel how different faiths coexist in the area.

The area is easily accessible on foot from modern Tel Aviv, and the flea market operates daily except on Saturdays. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the alleys are very narrow and uneven with significant changes in elevation.

The alleyways are named after zodiac signs and lead toward the ancient port, where local fishermen still deliver their daily catch to waterfront dining spots. This craft connects the neighborhood's old tradition with its present-day activity in an unobvious way.
