Jaffa Old Protestant Cemetery, Protestant cemetery in Jaffa, Israel
Jaffa Old Protestant Cemetery is a burial ground holding approximately 34 graves arranged across a compact, enclosed area near Yefet Street in Tel Aviv. The gravestones feature English inscriptions recording the names and dates of those laid to rest here.
The cemetery was established in 1842 by the Anglican Church in Jerusalem following the deaths of seven British sailors in a shipwreck near Jaffa. This location records the arrival and presence of Western Protestant communities in the region throughout the 1800s.
The cemetery represents the presence of Protestant communities in Jaffa during the 19th century, particularly those connected to British and American consulates.
The cemetery is located behind Tabitha Scottish school, accessible through an alley branching from number 19 on Yefet Street. Allow time to explore at your own pace, as gravestones are scattered throughout the compact grounds and some inscriptions may be faint with age.
Of the original burial sites, about 30 graves remain identifiable while four others survive only as fragmentary remnants. This mixture of well-preserved and partially destroyed graves reflects decades of exposure to the elements and changing conditions around the site.
