Jejuri, Pilgrimage site in Pune district, India
Jejuri is a small town in Pune district, Maharashtra, organized around a hilltop Hindu temple. Narrow lanes wind upward from the bazaar area below, while residential houses and smaller shrines line the lower slopes.
The site developed into a pilgrimage center during medieval times, when regional rulers constructed protective structures and rest houses for pilgrims. Later dynasties added gateways and staircases to ease the ascent to the summit.
The temple takes its name from the deity Khandoba, a regional form of Shiva venerated here with yellow powder. Visitors can observe devotees smearing the powder as a mark of devotion onto walls and floors, giving the entire complex a warm golden hue.
The ascent begins at the foot of the hill, where stalls selling offerings and devotional items line the path. Sturdy footwear is advisable as the steps can be uneven and crowded during festival days.
Small bells hang along the stairway that pilgrims ring to announce their arrival. The ringing creates a chiming atmosphere that spreads across the entire slope and can be heard from a distance.
