Atala Masjid, Jaunpur

Atala Masjid is a brick structure with a prayer hall divided by columns into three sections, topped by three large domes. A grand gateway with tall pylons leads into the courtyard, and the overall layout follows a square pattern.

Construction started around 1376 under Sultan Firuz Shah III and faced several interruptions before completion in 1408 under Ibrahim Shah Sharqi. The long building period reflects the dynasty's changing circumstances and available resources.

The mosque shows how local craftsmanship traditions blended with Islamic design principles in every detail of its structure. Visitors can see this mix in the decorations and how the spaces are arranged.

The site is easily accessible and within walking distance of other historic structures like the nearby Shahi Qila Fort. Visitors should allow time to explore the building and courtyard to fully appreciate the architectural details.

The central dome rises about 17 meters above the ground, giving the interior a generous sense of vertical space. This height is amplified by the 23-meter-tall entrance pylons, which dominate the sight line as visitors approach.
