Lal Darwaza Masjid, Jaunpur, Islamic mosque in Begumganj, Jaunpur, India.
Lal Darwaza Masjid is an Islamic place of worship in Begumganj with three entrance gates that open into a central courtyard where visitors and worshippers gather. The structure contains pillars with ancient inscriptions that document the names and details of historical rulers from centuries past.
A queen commissioned this mosque during the middle of the 15th century, using stone and materials salvaged from demolished temples in another city. The construction represented a significant moment in the architectural development of the region.
Sanskrit and Pali inscriptions on two pillars within the mosque record the names of historical kings from Kannauj and their corresponding dates.
The mosque sits a few kilometers from the railway station and is accessible by local transport options. Visitors should know that the site follows religious customs and one should enter the interior with respect for ongoing worship.
The red coloring of the main entrance area inspired the building's name and makes it recognizable from a distance. This striking feature has helped it remain in local memory over the centuries.
