Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency, Parliamentary constituency in Karnataka, India
Uttara Kannada is a Lok Sabha constituency that combines eight Legislative Assembly segments across coastal areas, forests, and hill regions in Karnataka. These segments cover communities in diverse geographical settings from the Arabian Sea coast to inland forested areas.
The constituency was created in 1952 as Canara during India's first delimitation of parliamentary seats. Its current boundaries were redrawn in 2008 when six assembly segments from Uttara Kannada district were combined with two from Belgaum district.
The district represents diverse communities through its eight assembly segments, including Khanapur, Kittur, Haliyal, Karwar, Kumta, Bhatkal, Sirsi, and Yellapur.
Elections occur every five years across the region, with voting taking place at designated centers in both urban and rural areas. Voters are registered according to their residency within the constituency boundaries.
This constituency stands out because it draws six of its eight assemblies from one district while adding two from a completely separate district to the south. This unusual arrangement reflects how electoral boundaries sometimes cut across district lines to balance representation.
