Bhojtal, Ramsar wetland site in Bhopal district, India
Bhojtal is a water site comprising two connected lakes called Upper Lake and Lower Lake near Bhopal. This wetland complex spans several square kilometers and holds official protection status for its ecological importance.
The Upper Lake was created in the 11th century when King Bhoja built a dam across the Kolans River to secure water supply for his kingdom. This construction shaped the water resources of the region and remains significant to this day.
The name honors King Bhoja, a ruler whose influence shaped the region for centuries. Today, the place remains central to how local people work and live, supporting fishing and farming families alongside providing water that sustains the city.
The site is easy to explore on foot with good viewing areas from various shorelines. Early mornings offer the best conditions for observing wildlife and walking around the banks.
The complex filters its own water naturally through extensive aquatic plants that remove harmful substances. Thousands of bird species pass through annually, making it a critical stopover point on their migration routes.
