Flagstaff Tower, Signal tower in North Delhi district, India
Flagstaff Tower is a single-story building made of red sandstone sitting at the highest point of Kamla Nehru Ridge. The structure has small turrets at its corners and resembles a compact fortress when viewed from below.
The structure was built by the British Indian Army in 1828 to send signals between military outposts. During the 1857 Delhi Siege, it became a shelter for Europeans fleeing from rebel fighters.
The tower sits atop a ridge and shows British-era building style from the 1800s. Visitors can see traces of a time when European forces watched over Delhi from this high point.
Access is by following a direct path from the entrance opposite Delhi University's Vice Chancellor office through Kamla Nehru Ridge. The walk is straightforward and takes you through planted green areas up to the highest point.
The interior space could hold about 100 people, showing it was designed not just for signaling but as a shelter for many at once. The walls still display features that resemble a fortress, reflecting its original dual purpose.
