Kashmiri Gate, Historic gate in North Delhi, India.
Kashmiri Gate is a historic site in the North Delhi district of India, featuring two massive stone arches designed for military use. The structure combines elements of Mughal construction with later British additions.
Major Robert Smith built the gate in 1835 under British administration. Fighting erupted here in 1857 during the rebellion, when British forces used explosives to overcome the defenders.
The gate once served as the northern passage for imperial journeys toward Kashmir and takes its name from that route. Visitors today come mainly to see the visible bullet marks and damage on the facade that bear witness to military conflict.
The site sits at a transport junction with access to three metro lines and the Interstate Bus Terminal. Visitors can view the structure from outside at any time, as it stands freely in the public space.
The two passages were designed so that one could be used for entry and the other for exit. The structure is among the few remaining gates of Shahjahanabad that still retain both passages.
