Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, Red sandstone Jain temple in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, India
Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir is a sandstone sanctuary across from the Red Fort in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, India. Three slender towers rise above the roofline, and the main shrine sits on the first floor, surrounded by narrow galleries and polished walls.
Construction started in 1656 when Shah Jahan invited merchants to settle in the walled city. The community grew quickly and expanded the building over several decades.
The name refers to the bright red facades that glow in the morning sun and stand out from a distance. Worshippers often walk around the sanctuary on the first floor before praying at the decorated altars.
The sanctuary opens early in the morning and closes late in the morning, with a second opening in the evening. Hours shift slightly during winter months when the sun rises later.
A bird hospital in the complex treats thousands of injured animals each year and was founded back in the 1930s. The service cares for birds from across the city that are brought in by residents.
