Central Baptist Church, Delhi, Baptist church building in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, India
Central Baptist Church is a church building in Chandni Chowk with a wide colonnaded porch supported by circular columns and double-height verandahs featuring semi-circular arched openings on its main facade. The complex includes a primary school located within the courtyard, which brings activity to the space during certain hours.
It was founded in 1814 by the Baptist Missionary Society and stands as one of the first Christian institutions near the Red Fort in northern India. The church played an important role in spreading Protestant teaching across the region during the colonial period.
The interior displays memorial tablets and brass inscriptions in Urdu set within gilded Indo-Gothic frames, showing how European and Oriental design elements come together. This blend of styles appears throughout the decoration and reflects the community that shaped this place over time.
A visit requires respect for the active prayer life and school operations, especially on school days. Visitors should expect occasional restrictions when religious ceremonies or school activities are taking place.
The church is known as the Mother Church and has produced hundreds of religious leaders who established other churches throughout the Delhi region. Many of these successor churches still exist today and continue to shape Christian life in the city.
