Dariba Kalan, Silver jewelry market in Chandni Chowk, India
Dariba Kalan is a narrow market street in Old Delhi lined on both sides with shops selling silver jewelry, decorative objects, and household goods. The stores are packed tightly together, and the entire lane is devoted to silver trade with very little else on offer.
The street dates to the 17th century, when it grew alongside the construction of Shahjahanabad as a trading point for precious metals and gems. Over time it narrowed its focus to silver, and that specialization has remained to the present day.
In some shops, you can watch craftsmen shaping silver by hand, engraving fine patterns using tools that have barely changed over generations. The workshops sit directly behind the counters, so the line between making and selling disappears entirely.
The lane is easiest to explore early in the morning before foot traffic builds up and the narrow passage becomes harder to move through. The Chandni Chowk metro station is the most direct way to reach the area on foot.
Scattered among the silver shops are a handful of vendors selling natural perfumes made from old recipes using plant-based ingredients. This combination of silver work and traditional fragrance selling in one lane is not something you find in most market streets nearby.
