Perambur taluk, Administrative division in Chennai district, India
Perambur taluk is an administrative subdivision in the northern part of Chennai district, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It covers areas such as Kodungaiyur, Moolakadai, Madhavaram, and Perambur, where residential streets sit alongside commercial zones.
This subdivision was formed in December 2013 when the older Fort-Tondiarpet and Perambur-Purasawalkam taluks were reorganized. The change was meant to bring local governance closer to the people living in the northern parts of Chennai.
Tamil daily life is very visible here, with street shrines, small tea stalls, and open-air markets spread across the neighborhoods. During festivals like Pongal, residents decorate their doorsteps with kolam patterns and celebrate together in the streets.
The area sits in the northern part of Chennai and is connected to the rest of the city by suburban train lines, city buses, and main roads. Walking or taking an auto-rickshaw is often the easiest way to move between the neighborhoods.
Perambur was once known for its railway workshops, which played a role in the early development of rail infrastructure in India. This industrial past shaped the working-class character of several neighborhoods that still exist in this part of Chennai today.
