Pussimbing Tea Estate, Organic tea estate in Darjeeling district, India.
Pussimbing Tea Estate is an organic tea plantation in Darjeeling district that spreads across 280 hectares at elevations between 4,500 and 6,000 feet in the Himalayan region. The processing facility runs on hydroelectric power generated along the Balason River.
British planters founded Pussimbing Tea Estate in 1911 as a traditional plantation in the Darjeeling hills. The shift to organic growing methods came in 1994 with IMO Control certification.
The estate employs local residents of Nepali descent across three divisions, shaping the daily rhythm of the plantation. Work here follows patterns deeply connected to the seasons and the tea harvest cycles.
The site sits about 6 kilometers from Ghum railway station and is surrounded by steep slopes covered with tea plants. Visitors should expect humid conditions, especially during the monsoon season from June through September.
The name Pussimbing comes from the Lepcha language and refers to an area surrounded by multiple fresh streams flowing down steep slopes. These water systems played a key role in why this location was chosen for tea cultivation.
