Jaugada

Jaugada is a stone fortress situated in a strategic location in Ganjam district, Odisha, surrounded by defensive walls, towers, and a protective moat. The complex features a central rock formation marked with ancient inscriptions, serving as the focal point of the site.

The site was established around 250 BCE during the Mauryan Empire when Emperor Ashoka made it a provincial capital. Rock edicts were carved into the central stone to proclaim his religious and administrative authority across the region.

The fort complex displays five stone figures representing the Pandavas from Hindu mythology, which connect the site to ancient Indian traditions. These statues remain visible reminders of a cultural legacy that has shaped the landscape for centuries.

The site is accessible by local transportation from nearby towns and can be reached by traveling northwest from Brahmapur. Visitors should prepare for unpaved paths and plan their visit during drier months for better ground conditions.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered multiple Major Rock Edicts from Ashoka's time carved into the central stone formation. These inscriptions rank among the few surviving records of his reign and offer direct insight into his policies and beliefs.
