Real Academia de España en Roma, Creative residency and museum in Rome, Italy

The Real Academia de España en Roma is a creative residency and museum in Rome, Italy, housed in a former monastery. The solid building has tall windows, plain walls, and small gardens where residents can walk and think.

The institution opened in the late 19th century, moving into a former monastery at San Pietro in Montorio. Earlier, the Spanish government had already sent artists to Rome for study, but this became a permanent home for them to live and work.

The former monastery keeps a working rhythm tied to artists’ studios, archives, and occasional public talks. The small gardens with plants and fountains are a place where residents pause, and visitors can sense that daily life here revolves around making and sharing work.

The site sits near the historic center, so you can reach it on foot or by local bus. Inside, movement is easy through the old corridors and courtyards, though some older sections have uneven stone floors.

The academy was originally funded with money left by charities meant for the arts, not from a regular state budget. That unusual origin gave the first twelve resident artists scholarships to focus on their work in Rome.
