Santa Maria di Monteverginella, Naples, Medieval Catholic church in historic center, Naples, Italy.
Santa Maria di Monteverginella is a Baroque church in the historic center of Naples with a Latin cross floor plan, a single nave, and five chapels on each side. The interior features decorative marble elements and wall paintings that give the space an ornamental character.
A royal advisor established this church in 1314 on the site of a previous shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The complex was later transformed during the Baroque period to acquire its current decorative character.
The chapel displays artworks from the 18th century with paintings of religious subjects that reflect the artistic engagement of that period with spiritual themes. Visitors can observe different artistic periods in the decoration while walking through, showing how artistic expression changed over the centuries.
The church is open to visitors throughout the week and continues to function as an active place of worship and community gathering. It is helpful to check opening hours before visiting and to be mindful of scheduled services to allow time for unhurried exploration.
During a military conflict, a fragment from a damaged warship pierced through the roof and landed in the cloister without causing damage. This unexpected event left a mark in the site's history that visitors can trace today.
