Sant'Egidio

Sant'Egidio is a Catholic church in Trastevere with a protobaroque facade distinguished by Corinthian pilasters and a triangular pediment. The interior underwent restoration in 1998 while preserving its original design and religious artwork.

An earlier chapel at this location was first mentioned in 1123 before the present church was completed in 1630. The building became part of a Discalced Carmelite monastery complex.

The church houses a Russian devotional image from the 17th century depicting Christ's face on cloth held by angels at its center. This artwork creates a place of quiet prayer for visitors.

The church remains open for evening prayers and welcomes visitors respectfully. Keep in mind that active services take place, so appropriate conduct is expected.

Inside the church stands an altar of the poor featuring numerous crosses arranged as a mountain beneath a large wooden crucifix. This simple yet meaningful element reflects the personal spiritual focus of the place.
