Temple of Mercury, Roman temple on Aventine Hill, Rome, Italy

The Temple of Mercury stands on the slope of Aventine Hill, facing the Circus Maximus where chariot races took place in ancient Rome.

The temple was established in 495 BC by centurion M. Plaetorius, making it one of the earliest religious structures in the city of Rome.

The temple became a central point for merchants during the Ides of May, reflecting the connection between Mercury and commercial activities in Roman society.

Archaeological studies indicate the temple remained active until the third century, with evidence found on coins minted during Marcus Aurelius reign.

The temple structure featured four herms instead of traditional columns, supporting an architrave with a distinct curved pediment design.
