Saracco-Volante hut, Mountain hut in Ligurian Alps, Italy
The Saracco-Volante hut is located at 2200 meters elevation in the Gruppo delle Salìne area within the upper Valle Tànaro region and accommodates up to 12 guests. It provides basic facilities typical of alpine shelters at this altitude.
The shelter was established in 1967 by the Gruppo Speleologico Piemontese of CAI-UGET in Turin to support alpine research. It was created in response to growing scientific interest in the cave systems and geological phenomena of the region.
The shelter serves as a research base for speleologists and scientists studying the geological features of the Ligurian Alps. Visitors can observe the scientific work focused on the unique karst formations found throughout the region.
To visit this shelter, guests must collect the keys from the managing office beforehand. The main approach route starts from Carnìno Superiore and involves a 2.5-hour hike through mountainous terrain.
The shelter provides access to extensive cave systems that are actively explored by researchers. Many visitors do not realize that the cave exploration conducted from this base produces important discoveries about the underground geology of the Alps.
