Fort Central, Military fortification in Tende, France
Fort Central sits at 1,870 meters (6,135 feet) elevation in the Maritime Alps with thick stone walls and strategically placed openings for artillery. The installation forms a rectangular fortified position with integrated defensive features adapted to the terrain.
Construction of the fortification started in 1881 as part of a defensive network built after France annexed the County of Nice in 1860. It was one of several forts positioned along the newly defined mountain border.
The fort displays late 19th-century construction methods with its rectangular layout, moats, and drawbridges built from locally sourced white limestone and granite. Visitors can still observe the craftsmanship and careful stonework that went into this military installation.
Access is via pedestrian paths along RD 6204 or by vehicle from Castérino and Peyrefique during summer months. Visitors should expect mountain terrain and changing weather conditions at higher elevations.
The fort includes underground corridors and vaulted casemates hidden beneath grass embankments connecting various defensive positions. This subterranean network allowed defenders to move safely within the fortification while shielded from bombardment.
