Fort Pernante, Military fortress at Col de Tende, France
Fort Pernante stands at 2017 meters elevation, constructed with white limestone and local granite, partially buried into the Alpine terrain.
Built in 1883 by Italian authorities, the fort was part of a defense system designed to protect the border against potential French troop advances.
The fort exhibits classic 19th-century military architecture with its rectangular structure characteristic of Alpine fortifications in the region.
Reaching the fort requires hiking historical military trails from Col de Tende, following dirt roads to the hamlet of Colletta.
The fort forms one of four military control points spread across 7 kilometers, alongside Forts Giaure, Central, and Pepin.
