Passo della Croce Arcana, Mountain pass in Appennino Tosco-Emiliano, Italy.
Passo della Croce Arcana is a mountain pass in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, connecting the municipalities of Fanano and Abetone Cutigliano. An unpaved road links the village of Ospitale to the pass and continues toward Cutigliano and Doganaccia on the other side.
In the early Middle Ages, the pass served as a crossing between Tuscany and the Po Valley, sitting along the boundary between Lombard and Byzantine-controlled territories. Over the following centuries it remained in use as a route across the Apennines for travelers and traders.
A war memorial at the pass commemorates those who died during World War II, and visitors often stop there to pay their respects. The spot feels remote and exposed, which makes the presence of the memorial even more striking.
The pass is reached by an unpaved road that is open to hikers and horse riders within the Modenese High Apennines Regional Park. Weather can change fast at this altitude, so it is worth checking conditions before setting out.
In 2020, wind speeds of up to 270 kilometers per hour (about 168 miles per hour) were recorded at the pass, placing it among the most wind-exposed spots in Italy. This helps explain why the vegetation around the pass stays so low and sparse even in summer.
