Maria Santissima Avvocata sopra Maiori, Catholic sanctuary on Monte Falerzio, Maiori, Italy
Maria Santissima Avvocata sopra Maiori is a mountain shrine above the town of Maiori, set on the slopes of Monte Falerzio at over 800 meters elevation. The red brick church stands beside a natural grotto where the main altar and the Madonna statue are kept.
According to local tradition, a shepherd reported a vision of the Virgin Mary on the mountain in 1485, and a first altar was built inside the grotto shortly after. Over the following centuries, a proper church grew around that original site as the number of pilgrims increased.
Every year, especially at Pentecost, groups of pilgrims from the coastal towns climb the mountain on foot to honor the Madonna in her grotto. Inside, visitors find candles, votive offerings, and a quiet devotional space carved into the rock face.
The shrine is reached on foot along mountain trails starting from Maiori and nearby towns, so solid footwear and water are essential. The climb is steep and takes several hours, so setting out early in the morning helps avoid the midday heat.
The Madonna statue venerated inside the grotto is not the original from the late 1500s but a newer figure blessed in the early 2000s. Visitors who look closely can notice this, since the statue's craftsmanship reflects a modern hand even as the grotto around it dates back centuries.
