Territorial Abbey of La Trinità della Cava

The monastery occupies a strategic position in a gorge of the Finestre Hills, featuring Gothic cloisters and expansive architectural structures spanning multiple centuries.

Founded in 1011 by Alferius of Pappacarbone, the abbey received special privileges from Pope Urban II and was elevated to a territorial abbey in 1394.

The library preserves 15,000 historical documents from the 8th to 19th centuries, including the Codex Legum Longobardorum, the oldest collection of Lombard law.

Located at Via Morcaldi 6 in Badia di Cava, the abbey maintains regular religious services and educational programs for the surrounding community of 7,200 Catholics.

The first four abbots of the monastery achieved sainthood, with their canonization officially proclaimed by Pope Leo XIII on December 21, 1893.
