Gojome, town in Minamiakita District, Akita Prefecture, Japan
Gojome is a small town in Minamiakita District, Akita Prefecture, in northern Japan. Streets run through open fields and hilly areas, with local shops and a weekend market where farmers sell fresh produce and handmade goods.
Gojome has its roots in the samurai era and was once part of the historic Dewa Province. The town took its official form in the late 19th century, while keeping the agricultural way of life that still shapes it today.
The weekend market draws neighbors together to buy and sell local produce, and it has served as a gathering point for the community for a very long time. In May and August, traditional dances like the Ganjin dance and the Hitoichi Bon Odori bring residents together in costumes for shared celebrations.
Gojome is easiest to reach by car or bus from nearby Hachirogata Station. The Michi-no-Eki Gojome roadside station is a good starting point, offering local products and information about the town and surrounding area.
The weekend market in Gojome has been running for over 500 years, making it one of the oldest of its kind in the region. Every November, a mushroom festival gives visitors a look at how local people have long gathered and used forest produce from the nearby woods.
