Iwanoyama Kofun Cluster

The Iwanoyama Kofun Group consists of 18 burial mounds situated on a plateau at an altitude of 36 meters along the eastern shore of Lake Hachirōgata.

Archaeological excavations between 1961 and 1963 revealed significant burial artifacts including swords, armor, and personal ornaments dating from the early 9th century.

These burial mounds represent the northernmost ancient tombs along the Sea of Japan coast, containing wooden coffins and burial practices of the Nara and Heian periods.

The site, designated as a Prefectural Historic Site in 1963, covers an area of 1,000 square meters and remains under regular maintenance by local educational authorities.

The A1 tomb contained specific artifacts suggesting it belonged to government officials of the Ritsuryō state system, providing evidence of administrative presence in northern Japan.
