Furuichi Kofun Cluster, Ancient burial mounds in Osaka Prefecture, Japan
The Furuichi Kofun Cluster is a group of ancient burial mounds located across Habikino and Fujiidera that span several kilometers. The site contains numerous keyhole-shaped earthen mounds of varying sizes that you encounter while walking through the area.
These burial mounds were built between the late 4th and mid-6th century, showing the growth of a centralized state system in ancient Japan. The size and design of these structures reflect the increasing political organization of the period.
The mounds display clay figurines showing warriors, horses, and symbols of status that were arranged on their surfaces. These figures reveal how people in that era displayed their place in society.
Visit during cooler seasons when walking across the large site is more comfortable for extended exploration. Wear good shoes since you will walk on various paths across the terrain.
Twenty-seven of the largest mounds remain under Imperial Household Agency control, preventing archaeological digging at those locations. This means many secrets of these sites remain unexplored to this day.
