Konda Gobyōyama Kofun, Imperial tomb in Habikino, Japan.

Description

Konda Gobyōyama Kofun is a burial mound featuring a keyhole shape formed by a circular raised section and a rectangular front portion, all surrounded by a wide water-filled moat. The site spans a large area with sloped green embankments and calm water, creating an impressive visual presence when viewed from the surrounding walkways.

History

This burial mound was built during the first half of the 5th century and is designated by the Imperial Household Agency as the resting place of Emperor Ōjin. Its construction occurred during a period when such monumental structures demonstrated the power and influence of early Japanese ruling families.

Culture

The name references an ancient deity once honored in this area, reflecting the spiritual connection between the site and its original inhabitants. Today visitors can walk along the moat's edges and view the structure from different angles, which emphasizes the ceremonial nature of this sacred burial place.

Practical

The site is easily accessible with a walking path that circles the burial mound, allowing visitors to view it from multiple perspectives. Informational displays placed around and near the grounds help visitors understand the structure and its significance.

Did you know?

Archaeological research has shown this monument to be the second largest burial site in Japan and features an unusually large square platform on its front section. This platform provides evidence of ceremonial rituals and possibly additional burials of family members.
