Jigokudani Monkey Park, Snow monkey park in Yamanouchi, Japan.
Located at 850 meters altitude in Nagano Prefecture, this park features Japanese macaques living freely among natural thermal springs and mountainous landscapes.
The park opened in 1964 following the initiatives of a Japanese hiker who discovered a group of monkeys in 1957 while exploring the region.
Japanese macaques demonstrate natural behaviors and social hierarchies, maintaining traditional group dynamics while interacting within their mountain habitat.
Visitors can access the park via a 1.6-kilometer forest trail from Kanbayashi Onsen, with operation hours between 9:00 and 16:00 throughout the year.
During winter months, when temperatures drop to -10°C, the resident macaques gather in the outdoor hot springs, creating a singular display of primate adaptation.
