Yamate Tunnel, Road tunnel in Tokyo, Japan
The Yamate Tunnel extends 18.2 kilometers beneath Tokyo's surface, connecting the Takamatsu area in Toshima to the Oi Junction in Shinagawa.
Construction of this transportation infrastructure began in 1992, with the initial Takamatsu-Nishi Shinjuku segment opening in December 2007 and full completion in March 2015.
The tunnel represents Japanese engineering excellence, incorporating advanced safety systems with emergency exits every 350 meters and monitoring cameras at 100-meter intervals.
The underground passage features two lanes in each direction and maintains a depth of 30 meters, reducing surface traffic between Ikebukuro and Oi districts.
This structure holds the title of Japan's longest road tunnel and ranks as the second longest road tunnel globally, following Norway's Laerdal Tunnel.
