Niocho, Historical district in Mitoyo, Japan

Niocho is a coastal district in Mitoyo that stretches along the Seto Inland Sea and combines citrus orchards, small residential buildings, and a working port. The area is also served by regular bus lines and operates ferry routes to nearby islands.

In the 1500s this location was a fortified place that fell under attack, changing hands and losing its military role. Following this shift, important religious buildings were relocated to new sites and have shaped the area ever since.

The Nio Hassaku Doll Festival occurs yearly on August 1, when local children display handmade dolls throughout different parts of the neighborhood. This tradition reflects how the community keeps its customs alive through the participation of younger generations.

The area is well connected by both bus and water routes, with regular services operating to nearby places. Visitors should check local schedules ahead of time and be prepared for seasonal variations in service availability.

A traditional bakery from 1948 makes regional specialties including fried bread filled with fava bean paste, sold in narrow alleys throughout the area. This small shop is often missed by visitors even though it has operated for decades.
