Tateno Station, railway station in Minamiaso, Aso district, Kumamoto prefecture, Japan
Tateno Station is an above-ground, unmanned railway station in Minamiaso, Japan, serving as the terminal stop of the Minami Aso Railway and a junction with the Hōhi Main Line. The station has open platforms with no enclosed building or ticket counter, and trains from both lines stop here.
The Minami Aso Railway line and Tateno Station were built to connect the isolated communities of the Aso valley to the wider rail network. After the 2016 earthquakes caused major damage to the line, the route remained partially closed for several years before fully reopening.
Tateno sits at the meeting point of two railway lines, and travelers passing through often pause to take in the open countryside around the platforms. The contrast between the small, unstaffed station and the scenery that surrounds it gives the stop a quiet, almost rural character.
Because the station has no staff, it is a good idea to buy tickets in advance or at a nearby machine before boarding. The open platforms offer little shelter, so dressing for the weather makes the wait more comfortable.
Tateno is one of the few stations in Japan where a small private regional railway meets a JR main line, meaning very different types of trains share the same stop. Passengers traveling on the local Minami Aso trains can step off and onto long-distance JR services without going far.
