Surugadai spreads across a large site with lecture halls, seminar rooms, a media center, dormitories and a sports hall. The campus covers about 200 acres and offers space for teaching, research and student life in a wooded setting.
Haruyuki Yamazaki founded the institution in 1987 with the goal of bringing an American liberal arts model to Japan. His father had previously run a cram school that served as the starting point for the new project.
The institution offers five undergraduate faculties including Law, Economics, Media and Information Resources, Contemporary Cultures, and Psychology for 4,026 students.
International students receive support and can choose between several fields, including law, economics, media, cultural studies and psychology. The teaching method relies on small groups to encourage exchange between faculty and students.
The university maintains an endowment of 601 million dollars and employs 142 academic staff members to support its educational mission.
