Tsurumi River, River system in Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
The Tsurumi River is a river system that flows about 42 kilometers from Machida through the urban areas of Yokohama and Kawasaki before emptying into Tokyo Bay. It passes through densely populated regions and shapes the landscape between these major cities.
The river became an important connector between regions when the Takano Ohashi bridge was built across it in the 17th century. This bridge improved traffic and communication between the areas on either side of the waterway.
The river banks are popular places for walks and are used by residents throughout the year. During cherry blossom season, people gather along the shores to enjoy the blooming trees and the riverside atmosphere.
The riverside has several public paths and parks where you can walk and relax. The best time to visit is during the day when the paths are easy to see and many people are around.
The waterway serves as a crucial flood control system protecting the surrounding area and its millions of residents. Its banks were specially designed to absorb water during heavy rains and safeguard the cities from flooding.
