Yokohama Maritime Disaster Prevention Base, Coast guard station in Shinkō, Yokohama, Japan.
The Yokohama Maritime Disaster Prevention Base is a coast guard operations center in the Shinkō port area of Yokohama, Japan, responsible for emergency response and safety at sea. The building combines working operational areas with a public exhibition space and sits directly on Shinko Pier.
Shinko Pier, where the base stands, was built between 1899 and 1917 as part of a broader effort to modernize Yokohama's port. That construction period laid the foundation for organized maritime operations in the area.
The exhibition area displays real equipment used in daily coast guard operations, giving visitors a concrete look at how maritime rescue works in the port. The displays are straightforward and easy to follow without any prior knowledge.
The base sits on Shinko Pier in the flat and walkable Minato Mirai waterfront area, making it easy to reach on foot from nearby stations. Visiting in the morning or early afternoon tends to be more comfortable before crowds arrive later in the day.
A ship hull on display was involved in a covert operation off the southwest coast of Kyushu in 2001. The recovered vessel was brought here and turned into a public educational exhibit.
