Yunishigawa-Onsen Station, railway station in Nikko, Tochigi prefecture, Japan
Yunishigawa-Onsen Station is a railway station built inside a mountain tunnel approximately 500 meters below ground in Yunishigawa, Tochigi Prefecture. The platform sits deep within a long dark tunnel that also houses a free foot bath fed with natural hot spring water and a roadside market selling local foods.
The station was constructed to improve access to the remote mountain town of Yunishigawa, which has been home to descendants of the Taira clan since the 12th century after they fled here to escape enemies. The underground design respects the town's historical isolation while providing modern rail connections.
The town's name reflects the Taira clan members who hid here in the 12th century and kept their presence strictly secret. Today visitors can walk among wooden houses and experience the winter snow festival, which brings together local traditions of building and lighting snow structures at night.
The station sits at a central access point to the town and connects with buses that take visitors into the main area. It is advisable to wear warm clothing and waterproof footwear in winter, as the approach routes may be snow-covered.
The station was built deep beneath the mountain, making it one of Japan's most unusual transport hubs. Visitors can enjoy a free foot bath with natural hot spring water right in the tunnel before heading up into the town.
