Sapporo Art Museum

The Sapporo Art Museum is an art institution with multiple exhibition spaces within the Sapporo Art Park, presenting both permanent displays and rotating shows of Japanese and international art. The collection spans five distinct categories covering a broad artistic range.

The museum was founded in 1990 as the first major contemporary art institution in northern Japan. Its opening brought a new artistic direction to the Hokkaido region.

The museum displays works by regional artists from Hokkaido alongside pieces from international creators through themed exhibitions. This mix lets visitors experience different artistic perspectives in a single visit.

The museum sits within the Geijutsunomori grounds that house other facilities, making it part of a larger cultural complex. Visitors should allow time to explore both indoor galleries and outdoor areas at their own pace.

The grounds are connected to an extensive sculpture garden displaying 74 outdoor works by artists from Japan and abroad. This open-air collection creates an unexpected bridge between indoor and outdoor art experiences.
