上江橋, Steel girder bridge in Kawagoe, Japan
Kamiebashi is a steel bridge that carries traffic across the Arakawa and Iruma Rivers between Kawagoe and Nishi Ward. The structure has four lanes and forms part of the main National Route 16 corridor connecting these areas.
Construction started in 1894 with a wooden design that first connected these river crossings. The bridge underwent several rebuilding phases, reaching its current steel form with four lanes in 1997.
The bridge serves as a central infrastructure element in both the Saitama and Kawagoe landscape collections, representing regional transportation development.
The bridge is open to traffic at all times as it serves a major route. Water levels can rise significantly during heavy rain, which may affect travel conditions.
One of the original wooden pillars from 1894 has been preserved and is displayed in Kawagoe's local heritage collection. This remnant connects visitors directly to the bridge's earliest years.
