ホテル仙台プラザ, Hotel in Japan
Hotel Sendai Plaza was a hotel in central Sendai, occupying a multi-story building on an elevated plot of land in the city center. It had several restaurants, a large banquet hall named Matsushima, and upper-floor dining areas that looked out over the city rooftops.
The hotel opened in 1976 and became a familiar landmark in Sendai over the following decades. After the 2011 earthquake, it closed permanently, and the building was later torn down to make way for a new NHK broadcasting facility on the same site.
The hotel was a meeting point for local residents, not just travelers passing through the city. Its banquet rooms and restaurants were regularly used for weddings, receptions, and community gatherings.
The hotel no longer exists, as it was demolished after 2011. The central location near government offices is easy to reach on foot from the main areas of downtown Sendai.
When the 2011 earthquake struck, the hotel opened its doors to people fleeing the tsunami and handed out blankets and meals to those seeking safety. Over the years, guests included architect Bruno Taut and baseball manager Katsuya Nomura.
