Hachioji Medical Prison was a specialized correctional facility in Hachioji designed to care for inmates with serious medical and psychiatric needs. The institution focused on providing treatment and support for those whose health conditions required intensive care.
The prison started in 1878 as a regular correctional facility in Hachioji but was restructured in 1951 to serve as a medical institution. It became the second specialized medical prison in Japan, following an earlier facility.
The facility implements occupational therapy programs including paper crafts and gardening activities to support the rehabilitation of inmates with mental health conditions.
The facility sat roughly 8 minutes' walk from JR Hachioji and Keio Katakura stations, making it easy to reach by public transport. The grounds were not open to visitors, as it remained an active correctional institution throughout its operation.
The facility was unique in offering comprehensive end-of-life care for dying inmates, a role no other prison in the country provided. This service made it a vital institution within Japan's correctional system.
