Kitamura Museum

The Kitamura Museum is an art gallery in Kamigyō-ku housing about 1,000 works, including numerous pieces recognized as cultural properties. The artworks are displayed within a traditional setting that is itself architecturally protected.

The museum was founded by businessman Kinjirō Kitamura and opened in 1977 near the junction of the Kamo and Takano Rivers. This riverside location was deliberately chosen to align with classical artistic traditions.

The building displays traditional Japanese architecture with a tea room and covered walkways that are registered as cultural properties. The spaces inside reflect classical aesthetic principles and shape how visitors experience the art.

The museum operates during spring and autumn exhibitions and can be visited with or without a guide. It is helpful to check ahead for current displays, as the collection changes regularly based on conservation and exhibition schedules.

The collection includes rare documents such as a handwritten diary from the early 1200s and scroll paintings featuring classical subjects by renowned artists. These historical treasures offer insights into Japanese artistic traditions spanning centuries.
