Senri New Town, Planned community in northern Osaka Prefecture, Japan
Senri New Town is a planned community spreading across around 1,160 hectares in Toyonaka and Suita, featuring residential blocks, commercial spaces, and numerous parks in a structured layout. The development is arranged so that schools, shopping centers, and public transportation connections to central Osaka are within walking distance.
The Osaka Prefectural Government initiated this urban development in 1962 to address housing shortages during Japan's post-war population growth and economic expansion. The project was a direct response to overcrowding in existing urban areas across the region.
The neighborhood units were designed to encourage residents to participate in local festivals and traditional celebrations throughout the year. These communal spaces foster social connections among families living in the area.
Visitors navigate easily through the clear division into districts and neighborhood units, which remain manageable thanks to separate pathways for vehicles and pedestrians. The entire development is flat with green spaces everywhere, making exploration pleasant and straightforward.
The area was an early application of the neighborhood unit concept in Japan, designed to encourage social interaction through physical design. This model later influenced many other developments across the country.
