Nifrel, Public aquarium and zoo at Expocity, Suita, Japan
Nifrel is an aquarium and zoo inside the Expocity shopping complex in Suita that presents aquatic creatures, land animals, and interactive installations across eight themed areas. The zones progress through different concepts such as color, movement, and behavior, with each offering a distinct approach to presenting living beings.
The facility opened in November 2015 as part of the newly built Expocity complex on the former site of the 1970 Expo. The concept combined aquarium, zoo, and art installations under one roof for the first time in Japan.
Thename originates from a Japanese phrase meaning to sense differences or make connections, reflected in how exhibits encourage direct observation rather than reading labels. Visitors walk freely among some animals instead of viewing them behind glass throughout the entire facility.
The grounds are fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, with elevators available between levels. Most areas allow photography without flash, while some zones restrict photography to keep animals calm.
The Wonder zone features white tiger pythons and fish swimming together in a shared tank that connects aquatic and terrestrial habitats without visible barriers. Visitors can sit on cushioned steps and watch through windows placed directly below the water surface.
