Gallery Namban

The Gallery Namban exhibits 250 artifacts, including religious items, paintings, lacquerware, and ceramics depicting the intersection of Japanese and European art traditions.

The museum, established in May 1968 by Yoshiro Kitamura, houses a collection of early modern period art from the initial encounters between Japan and European nations.

The collection includes Important Cultural Property status artworks such as the folding screens depicting the arrival of European traders in Japan during the 16th century.

The museum opens twice annually, throughout May and November, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with admission fees of 800 yen for adults and 600 yen for students.

The museum preserves artifacts from the Nanban period, when Portuguese and Spanish traders brought new cultural elements to Japan between 1543 and 1639.
