Ōsakikamijima, Rural island in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan
Ōsakikamijima is a rural island in the Seto Inland Sea situated between Hiroshima and Ehime prefectures, covering about 43 square kilometers. Mount Kannomine rises approximately 453 meters and forms the landscape's dominant feature.
The island took its current form in 2003 following the administrative merger of three towns: Osaki, Higashino, and Kinoe. This consolidation established the foundation for how the island is organized today.
The island maintains a strong rowing tradition, notably through the Kaidenma Regatta where teams compete in traditional boats across the Seto waters. This event shapes local life and reflects the deep connection residents have with maritime heritage.
The island is accessible only by ferry, with regular service to Takehara on Honshu, Imabari on Shikoku, and neighboring islands. Plan extra time since ferry travel is part of the visit and departure requires the same boat journey.
The Hiroshima Global Academy opened in 2019 and offers specialized English language programs, positioning the island as an educational hub. This development has brought students from across the region and added a distinctive character to the community.
