Horikoshi Shrine

Horikoshi Shrine, Shinto shrine in Japan

Horikoshi Shrine is situated on Mount Chausu in Osaka, surrounded by old trees that create a calm setting within the busy city. The grounds contain several smaller shrines, including an Inari shrine dedicated to prosperity and a shrine marking the start of the Kumano pilgrimage route, along with an ancient tree spanning about 500 years.

The shrine was built by Prince Shotoku to honor his uncle, Emperor Sushun, Japan's 32nd emperor, making it connected to the early period when Buddhism and Shinto developed side by side. Over time, it became an important stopping point for pilgrims visiting the sacred Kumano shrines.

The shrine's name comes from an old moat that once ran along its south side, with Horikoshi meaning to cross that moat in Japanese. Visitors sense how this historical passage shaped the place and keeps the connection between the shrine and the people who visit it alive.

The shrine sits about 10 to 15 minutes walk from Abenobashi Station, and several subway lines stop nearby if you prefer public transport. Opening hours run from early morning through early evening, and parking is available for those arriving by car.

A stone frog on the grounds is believed to return lost items or money when visitors pour water over it and pray for help. This unusual practice shows how local beliefs persist at a place where people express personal hopes and wishes.
